Meeting point: on the day of the tour at 18:00 at the Kürsingerhütte car park
Return: on the 2nd day at approx. 17:00 at the car park
Day 1:
We recommend travelling by private car to the Hopffeldboden car park, from here we continue by valley taxi (we are happy to book this for you). We drive through the Obersulzbachtal valley to the upper Keesboden at just under 2000 metres above sea level. From here, you hike through the glacier-carved high valley – with a bit of luck, you may spot marmots and edelweiss. After about 2 hours of walking, you will reach the spacious Kürsingerhütte (2558 m).
There we discuss with the mountain guide what it is like to walk in a rope team and with crampons! After a good dinner, we spend the night in a shared room (don’t forget your sleeping bag and earplugs).
Walking time: from the material cable car to the Kürsingerhütte approx. 2 to 2 ½ hours;
Day 2
With the first light of the day, we set off early in the morning for the summit. After an hour we reach the glacier path. There we are roped up. Right at the start of the glacier access, the group has to cross a first crevasse zone. On the Untersulzbachtörl plateau, we enjoy the first rays of sunshine, with the 3000 metre peaks sparkling in the morning light all around us.
The further ascent leads over the mighty glacier towards the Venedigerscharte (3400 m). The ascent to the saddle is the steepest section of our tour, and in some years we also have to overcome an impressive edge crevasse here. After this effort, we have earned a break. The mountains south of the Tauern now lie ahead of us, and in fine weather the Großglockner is close enough to touch.
The further ascent to the summit mobilises our stamina reserves, but after the narrow summit ridge, the summit cross beckons and a unique view rewards the Venediger climbers (approx. 5 hours to the summit). The view sweeps from the Dachstein over the Glockner group, the Julian Alps, the Dolomites, Ortler and Adamello, the Ötztal Alps to the Karwendel and the Wilder Kaiser. A large part of the Eastern Alps lies at the mountaineer’s feet.
After a well-earned rest at the summit, we begin our descent. We descend quickly over the wide glacier surfaces. Now everyone is looking forward to the rest at the Kürsingerhütte, looking up to the summit and enjoying their own achievement (descent to the Kürsingerhütte takes approx. 3 hours). After a well-earned rest, we descend from the hut. The national park taxi is waiting there to take us back to the car park, where we arrive in the late afternoon (approx. 17:00).
Walking times: Summit ascent depending on conditions 4-6 hours, descent to the hut approx. 2 ½ hours, descent to the material cable car 1 hour.
Important:
This is a guided high mountain tour – very good physical condition required! If you are not in good physical condition, the mountain guide at the Kürsingerhütte may decide that it is not possible for you to climb the Großvenediger. We ask you to accept this for safety reasons!
Appropriate clothing (+sunglasses, gloves, hat, gaiters, headlamp if necessary) and protection against the cold are essential!
