From a simple forest inn to a 4-star superior hotel

Hotel Gassner

Even Aunt Lisl knew that, besides mountains and well‑fluffed pillows, you also need a fine instinct, an open heart, a cosy little spot to unwind and some good food for a proper feel‑good feeling. That was over 70 years ago now. Since then, as a family, we have taken many new paths to preserve that special feeling of home – and to keep re-imagining your holiday.

Hosts since 1949

Our Hotel Gassner 4-star superior hotel has grown from a small forest guesthouse – and the charming Gassner Treehouse along with it. We are very confident that Aunt Lisl would be pleased with what has become of the foundations of her era.

Your hosts

Sonja and Hans-Peter Gassner

Hi there – we’re Sonja and Hans-Peter Gassner. Siblings, hosts, and wholeheartedly here for you in person. As a third-generation family business, our establishment thrives on the hospitality passed down to us by our Aunt Lisl and our parents: that special feeling of being at home, sustained by many wonderful people who work with us and love meeting people just as much as we do.

We’re immediately on informal terms with our guests - because it creates closeness and simply makes their time at Hotel Gassner that much more enjoyable. Perhaps that's exactly why so much here is so straightforward, warm and genuine. We look back on our history with gratitude, but we prefer to look ahead – to everything that can make your holiday with us that little bit more special.

It all began in 1949, when Hans and Lisl Gassner built the small woodland guesthouse 'Landhaus Gassner', laying the foundations for the hotel we have today. The guesthouse soon became the 'Gasthof Gassner' – with a cosy dining room, running water and space for 28 guests. With the purchase of their own farm, Kühnreit, and the Haflinger mare Lotti, who used to collect guests from the railway station, a long-cherished wish came true in 1957.

The 1960s and 1970s were characterised by a spirit of change: The house was given an extra storey, a dining hall was built, an indoor pool and a sauna were added – and with Sonja and Hans-Peter, the next generation also grew up. In 1981, Sepp and Renate Gassner took over the business and continued it with great enthusiasm. In 1987, the first lift was installed; in 1998, the wellness area was expanded to include a relaxing sauna world.

The year 2000 marked the beginning of a new era: alongside the new suites, the conservatory and the refurbishment of the dining room, joining the Wanderhotels association also turned Hotel Gassner into a true favourite with nature lovers. In 2007, Sonja and Hans-Peter took over the hotel – and since then, the Gassner has continually evolved: with attention to detail, respect for history and a keen sense of what guests are looking for today. New rooms, staff quarters, a treehouse and numerous upcycling projects were created, culminating in the wellness extension to 1,200 m² with a natural pool, panoramic sauna and GardenSPA.

As recipients of the HolidayCheck Award may times over, we are now among the world’s most popular hotels – and we owe that above all to our guests, who help write our story a little further with every stay.
