Untersulzbachtal
Where nature preserves its treasures
Hardly anywhere feels more pristine
The Untersulzbach wilderness area is unique, uninhabited, and of extraordinary beauty. The valley is especially renowned for its wealth of minerals: rock crystal, apatite, aquamarine, and adular can all be found here – and the Knappenwand is world-famous for its exceptional epidote deposits.
The valley also has a fascinating history: for around 500 years copper was mined at the Hochfeld. Today, you can explore part of the old tunnels on a guided tour through the show mine. A particularly rewarding highlight is the Untersulzbach Waterfall – a 50-meter-high cascade nestled into the forest landscape, captivating visitors with its yellow lichens glowing in the spray.
Since 2019, the Sulzbach valleys have carried the highest IUCN designation as a recognized Wilderness Area, Category Ib – a true natural jewel of international significance.
